A sentence is a group of words that taken together express a complete thought.
Sentences are sometimes classified by function:

An interrogative sentence asks a question (and is punctuated with a “?”).
An exclamatory sentence makes an exclamation (and is punctuated with a “!”).
An imperative sentence gives a command(and is punctuated with a “.”).
A declarative sentence makes a statement (and is punctuated with a “.”).

Sentences are sometimes classified by form:

A simple sentence has one independent clause
A complex sentence has one independent and one or more dependent clauses.
A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses.
A compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
