Prov 24:1
אַל־תְּקַנֵּא בְּאַנְשֵׁי רָעָה וְאַל־ [תִּתְאָו כ] (תִּתְאָיו ק) לִהְיֹות אִתָּֽם׃
Do not be jealous of men of evil and do not long to be with them.
Comments:
אַל with a YQTL is a prohibition. Used with the jussive תִּתְאָו, it is also negative imperative; cf Gesenius §109b.
Note the כ ketiv ק qere variant here. תִּתְאָו is a hitpael jussive from אָוָה. Recall that a jussive will shorten a verb any chance it gets. The third-hey verbs are prime candidates for shortening.
לִהְיֹות is an infinitive of purpose; cf Gesenius §114g.
Prov 24:2
כִּי־שֹׁד יֶהְגֶּה לִבָּם וְעָמָל שִׂפְתֵיהֶם תְּדַבֵּֽרְנָה׃
Because violence their heart ponders and trouble their lips speak.
Comments:
Note the irregular word order of שֹׁד and עָמָל for purposes of emphasis.
Here you have two YQTL forms with no vav-conversive. This particular usage is common in Job and Proverbs when referring to facts of experience which are true in all times and places; Gesenius 107f.
Note the sheva under the prefix In תְּדַבֵּֽרְנָה; cf verb diagnostics.
Prov 24:3
בְּחָכְמָה יִבָּנֶה בָּיִת וּבִתְבוּנָה יִתְכֹּונָֽן׃
By wisdom, a house is built and by understanding it is established.
Comments:
Note the nifal triangle in יִבָּנֶה.
וּבִתְבוּנָה is from תָּבוּן.
יִתְכֹּונָֽן is a hitpolel form as happens in some hollow verbs. Perhaps an iterative use?
In terms of the parallelism here, note how there is movement from the first clause to the second. It is one thing for a house to be built wisely; it is a better thing to have that house established on a good foundation. See Longman’s approach in How to Read the Psalms, 97–98. He questions the existence of what has traditionally been called “synonymous parallelism”.
Prov 24:4
וּבְדַעַת חֲדָרִים יִמָּלְאוּ כָּל־הֹון יָקָר וְנָעִֽים׃
and with knowledge the rooms are filled with all riches, precious and pleasant.
Comments:
Again, note the nifal triangle in יִמָּלְאוּ.
We expect attributive adjectives to follow the noun they modify as here with יָקָר וְנָעִֽים.
